I inside industry inBrief ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Canada will provide an off-theshelf design based on the German Navy's Berlin class fleet oilers for the RCN's Joint Support Ship project. ThyssenKrupp won out over a custom design by BMT Fleet Technology following assessments conducted by several government organizations and third-party advisors, including KPMG and First Marine International. The JSS will replace the navy's two remaining Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment Ships that are nearing the end of their service lives. Seaspan's Vancouver Shipyards will now review the TKMS design package before the government acquires the design license. Vancouver-based OSI Maritime Systems has signed a contract with South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. Daewoo is building three Type 209 diesel submarines for the Indonesian Navy and OSI will deliver Integrating Navigation and Tactical Systems, including ECPINS-W Sub software. Recognizing the importance of small- and medium-sized businesses, Western Economic Diversification Canada has provided $533,840 to the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada to coordinate and manage seven inter-related projects that will help western Canadian aerospace companies identify new markets, customers and technologies. Abbotsford-based Cascade Aerospace was awarded a $225 million maintenance contract for the CC-130H Hercules avionics system. Cascade will serve as prime service provider for program management, engineering support, maintenance support, materiel support and technical information support on the legacy fleet. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Toronto-based software designer OMX have signed a two-year deal that will provide GA-AS with access to a searchable database of over 50,000 Canadian defence, aerospace, and security companies to better manage its industrial and regional benefits program. GA-AS is offering its Predator B and/or Predator C Avenger for Canada's Joint Unmanned Surveillance and Target Acquisition System (JUSTAS) program. In May 2011, GA-AS and Montreal-based CAE formalized a teaming arrangement to develop solutions for Canada's ISTAR needs. Virtual Marine Technology of Newfoundland will develop and build an embedded simulation-based training system for Germany's Raytheon Anschütz for its Integrated Navigation System (INS). The trainer will simulate real-world scenarios for bridge personnel through the stimulation of on-board navigation equipment. Burnaby-based Weatherhaven will supply the RCAF with portable repair and maintenance shelters for its new fleet of CH-147 Chinook helicopters under a $5.7 million subcontract from Boeing. The contract is part of the $1.2 billion Medium-to-Heavy Lift Helicopter Project, awarded to Boeing in 2009, which will see delivery of 15 F-model Chinooks to CFB Petawawa later this summer. Meggitt Training Systems Canada signed a contract with an undisclosed ally for its Badger Unmanned Ground Vehicle-Targets (UGV-Ts) to train land forces ranging from advanced sniper training to anti-tank gunners. The company also received a follow-on contract from the Royal Australian Navy to provide naval targets for its training and certification tasks. MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates received an $11.4 million contract from the federal government for in-service support to the Unclassified Remote-sensing Situational Awareness capability of the Joint Space Support Project. This was the third government contract over the past two months. MDA renewed a $3.5 million contract to provide operational support for RADARSAT-2 ground stations on both the East and west coasts and signed an $8.3 million contract to extend its operational support for DND's Automated Airline Hosting and Aircraft Tasking System. 10 JUNE/JULY 2013 www.vanguardcanada.com Peerless Garments of Winnipeg has been awarded a $3.4 million contract for the production of hot weather hybrid shirts for Canadian Armed Forces personnel. Peerless will provide 36,500 hybrid shirts in Canadian Disruptive Pattern (CADPAT) Temperate Woodland and Arid Region patterns, as well as 300 shirts in special sizes as and when required. The contract requires the supplier to use Canadian-made textiles and to manufacture the shirts in Canada. Calgary-based FLYHT Aerospace Solutions will supply an undisclosed avionics integrator with seven AFIRS 228 (Automated Flight Information Reporting System) for the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules aircraft owned and operated by the air force of a middleeastern country. FLYHT says this is the second air force in the region to adopt AFIRS as part of an avionics modernization program. National Defence and Raytheon UK have awarded ITT Exelis a contract to deliver anti-jam GPS antenna arrays for several Canadian airborne military platforms. The N79 Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna, to be used on fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, prevents deliberate jamming and unintentional interference of timing signals when integrated with anti-jam GPS systems, such as the Raytheon Navshield system. The Canadian Armed Forces are seeking 15 miniature unmanned aircraft systems. In a bid solicitation, DND said the program would involve an acquisition contract for three years, plus two one-year options, and an in-service support contract. The deal will also include an option to purchase up to 75 MUAS.
