10 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2021 www.vanguardcanada.com S SIT REP CAF to receive advanced networking waveform from TrellisWare for Integrated Soldier System Suite TrellisWare Technologies, Inc. will provide advanced networking wave- form capability for the Canadian Armed Forces' Integrated Soldier Sys- tem Suite (ISS-S). ISS-S was formerly known as ISSP (Integrated Soldier System Project), which is a project to support the dismounted soldier by providing voice, data, and situational awareness for better command execution. The CAF selected the L3Harris RF-9820S powered by TrellisWare's TSM waveform under license for the Integrated Soldier System Assaulter (ISS- A) Radio. This program serves to upgrade the existing ISS-S radio capa- bility to provide both voice and data communication between soldiers, while automatically generating personal location information (PLI). According to a news release, the TrellisWare TSM waveform provides highly scalable flat networking of voice and data that can be mission tailored for an entire Army Task Force with 800+ nodes in a single RF channel, and supports the CAF's Land Tactical Command and Control (C2) Network with uninterrupted communications in dynamic environ- ments. The TSM waveform is ideally suited for diverse missions because the waveform can scale from narrow 1.2 MHz channels for voice and po- sitional reporting, up to 4, 10, 20 and 40 MHz channels supporting the sharing of multiple videos and other data. Equipped with the TSM waveform, the ISS-A Radios are better suited for contested and congested environments, among other current and emerging communication challenges facing the CAF. Due to the TSM be- ing a true Software-Defined Radio (SDR) waveform, TrellisWare contin- ues to evolve the capability with enhanced features and resiliency, while protecting Canadian investment in existing radio platforms. TrellisWare continues to support tactical command, control, and com- munications as networking needs and threats around the globe evolve. In partnership with Inter-Op Canada, Canada's in-country TSM experts, TrellisWare remains committed to support additional and future needs of the Canadian Armed Forces and Department of National Defence. Using TrellisWare's innovative Barrage Relay technology at its core, the TSM waveform is fundamentally changing the way tactical networking can be deployed for Canadian, U.S. and Coalition Forces, further enabling American, British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand Armies' Pro- gram (ABCANZ) interoperability. General Dynamics to Launch a Centre for RPAS Technologies in Québec General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada recently announced the es- tablishment of a Centre of Excellence in Sherbrooke for remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) technologies. GDMS is investing $9.7 million and is leveraging the contribution of the Government of Québec, through Inves- tissement Québec. Through this new Centre, GDMS is merging its world-class engineer- ing, commercialization, and export expertise with the imagination and technological prowess of Laflamme Aero Inc., one of Québec's emerging aerospace innovators. By leveraging forward-thinking academia, and the critical support of government, these investments will all serve to further develop the aerospace industry. General Dynamics has also made a strategic investment in Laflamme Aero to support the development and maturation of its LX300 tandem ro- tor RPAS platform. As a shareholder of Laflamme Aero, Investissement Québec is contrib- uting $1.9 million to industrialize and commercialize the LX300, demon- strating a firm commitment to further position Québec at the forefront of aerospace technology and innovation. "The Centre of Excellence will position the province of Québec at the leading edge of emerging RPAS technology and advanced autonomous air- borne mission systems integration," said David Ibbetson, vice president, and general manager of General Dynamics Mission Systems–Internation- al. "Remotely Piloted Aircrafts are the future of aerospace and our invest- ment will generate Québec and Canadian intellectual property, create and enhance domestic capacity, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics jobs – while developing world-leading RPAS technologies to address the growing needs of Canada and countries across the globe." According to the news release, the Centre's initial focus is to mature Laflamme's LX300 for new markets. For its part, General Dynamics has developed a mission-ready Command, Control, Communications, Comput- ers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) suite to meet the requirements of both domestic and international RPAS opportunities. "This support positions Laflamme for the future. What began as a pas- sion for aviation from my father has become something much larger. With the support of Investissement Québec and General Dynamics, we now have the opportunity to leverage our success and compete on a larger scale – both at home and abroad," said Enrick Laflamme, president of Laflamme Aero. Through the Centre of Excellence, General Dynamics Mission Systems will be expanding its investment in Canada to include a presence in Qué- bec, while generating opportunities for small and medium-sized business- es and strengthening the domestic RPAS ecosystem through the design, development, manufacturing, and sustainment of world-leading systems. "This remotely piloted aircraft system is the first of its kind to be fully developed and manufactured in Québec. This is a testament to the growth of our aerospace industry and our expertise in security and defence. With the creation of the Centre of Excellence in Sherbrooke and the commer- cialization of this innovative project, Québec will continue to stand out as a leader," said Eric Girard, Minister of Finance and Minister of Economy and Innovation. The Centre will create and sustain up to 45 highly skilled jobs in Québec. Image: TrellisWare Technologies, Inc.
