8 APRIL/MAY 2022 www.vanguardcanada.com EDITOR'S NOTE We're back in person at CANSEC! And, while things may not be completely back to normal just yet, we continue to im- provise and overcome… at Vanguard, at CANSEC, in the defence and security industry, across Canada and around the globe. Technology came through with vir- tual events when we needed it, but there is always something special about in person shows. Two years of sheltering in place against a new and invisible enemy makes it all the sweeter to be back in person. Vanguard is proud to be there. This issue you hold in your hands is packed full of promise for the future, in- novative ideas, futuristic technology, and emerging leaders. One need only look at our featured interview with BGen Chris C. Ayotte, Chief of Staff Army Strategy, Canadian Army. He gives us an update on the Canadian Army Modernization Strategy and its focus on digitizing the Army, digital innovation between the Army and industry, the military's inter- net of things, the Army capital investment program, and so much more. You are also not going to want to miss the feature article by General Sir James Everard, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, NATO; Advisor, WithYouWithMe, entitled "Are the Defence capabilities we need Across Western Militaries at Risk of Being 'Jam Tomorrow'?" His clear focus on the need to embrace new technologies and build our digital armies simultaneously enlight- ens and ignites a fire under anyone who reads. We are also very proud to share with you "A Recap of the ShipTech Forum 2022: Smart Ships of the Future." If you missed the event, or just want a refresher, we run down all the highlights and learnings about the new generation and future of shipbuilding in Canada. With the war continuing in the Ukraine, and tensions rising between NATO and Russia, who knows what Putin will do next. Our writer, Pierre LeBlanc lived in the Arctic for a number of year and writes a provocative article on the vulnerability of Canada's Arctic and outlines some inter- esting solutions. We always love to feature innovators and thought leaders in our Game Changers section and this month is no different. Do not miss our interviews with Kelly Hancock, Director of Finance and IT for General Dynamics Land Systems– Canada, and Jacques Comtois, Director of Canadian Operations, Arcfield Canada. Their ideas and insight are fascinating. And definitely do not miss Dave Perry who gets The Last Word this issue with his article, "Budget 2022: Deciphering Defence Spending". Mr. Perry takes us line by line through what he labels a mod- est increase to defence spending and ex- plains where and how the funds will be spent with some analysis of what effects this spending will have down the line. Highlights include planned spending to enhance Canada's Cyber Security and al- locations for priorities such as continental defence, commitments to allies, and in- vestments in equipment and technology to immediately increase the capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces. While looking to the future there also seem to be a sense of urgency. Perhaps it's just the need we all feel to get back to normal after the pandemic years, or maybe it's the sudden shift in the global security landscape we have been privy too since Russia's sudden invasion of Ukraine. Either way, Vanguard is here to bring it all into focus.
