6 JUNE/JULY 2022 www.vanguardcanada.com EDITOR'S NOTE Is anyone else feeling like coming out of the pandemic is just as dramatic as the pan- demic itself? What a whirlwind 2022 has been, and we are only halfway through. The first CANSEC in two years is already in the rear-view mirror. Every week there is not one, but multiple breaking news sto- ries and shifting geopolitical events. Some are tragic while others are truly ground- breaking, and many enlightening. All this to say, we have found ourselves extremely busy here at Vanguard. But it is not just us. Friends and colleagues from across the defence landscape have all echoed this very same sentiment. These are, indeed, inter- esting days, and we are so happy you're here with us, reading the latest issue of Vanguard, following us on our social me- dia, and listening to our podcast content. In this issue we explore Canada's Arctic, discuss nuclear energy, launch into outer space, share uplifting stories of innova- tion, optimism, and triumph, and so much more. Our featured Game Changers this month are truly outstanding. Michel Lalumiere is International Strategic Development Director for Canada, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI). He discusses with us how aerospace is deeply woven into the fabric of Canada. And Chris Pogue is President and Chief Executive Officer, Thales Canada, serving critical sectors such as the Canadian Coast Guard, urban rail, avionics and space ca- pabilities, and digital identity and security. In our featured article, "Continental Air Defence and NORAD Modernization" by Bill March, we take a deep look into this topic and the government's plan to rap- idly move forward on this front. The plan is ambitious but needed now more than ever. Similar in theme, Terrence Leversedge's "Command and Control: An Everchanging Landscape" examines NORAD modern- ization and the recent establishment of 3 Canadian Space Division as part of the Combined Space Operations Initiative (CSOI). What is CSOI? We've got you covered in our DASHBOARD section. We break down the partners, mission, guiding prin- ciples, and objectives for a clear vision of Combined Space Operations. Denis Thompson delivers an insight- ful investigation of the modern army in "Canada's 21st Century Army: The Changing Context of Conventional War." He finds a Canadian Army with established habits of operating in combined arms groupings to support coalition efforts but has several prescriptions for improvement. We end on an inspiring and uplifting note in The Last Word section with the "Invictus Uncovered: Reflections of a Warrior" by Nick Holyome. He reflects on his journey to the Invictus Games and the importance of ensuring veterans have the opportunity to contribute to a new mission.
