6 APRIL/MAY 2023 www.vanguardcanada.com E D I T O R' S N O T E Welcome back to another issue of Vanguard magazine. C4ISR and Beyond as well as the ShipTech Forum are in the rear-view and it's once again CANSEC time. We are look- ing forward to this year's event and con- necting with everyone. Before you know it, the Deep Blue forum will be here again. Speaking of which, you can save the date in your calendar for Thursday, November 2, taking place at The Westin Ottawa. You can also bookmark the website: https://van- guardcanada.com/deepblue2023. We'll be updating it with registration information, speaker bios, and the full agenda in the months ahead. We're really excited about the issue of the magazine that you hold in your hands. The Features section is brimming with in- sightful content such as our interview with BGen André Demers, Chief of Staff Army Strategy, who shares the Canadian Army's progress since the release of their digital strategy document last fall. He shares the development of a new group called the Directorate of Digital Army Digitalization and Combat System Integration, or DACSI that will assist the Canadian Army in being more agile. He notes that digital transfor- mation is a team sport and looks forward to building partnerships with industry. As we get ready for the 10th annual C4ISR and Beyond conference, it has grown in ways we could never have ex- pected. In this article we speak with two of the conference's advisors to get their reflections on the last decade, their expe- rience this year, and their aspirations for the conference's future. We share feedback from our attendees on lessons learned from the conference. Did you miss the ShipTech Forum back in February? Not to worry. We have a full recap by Norman Jolin in "Highlights from the ShipTech Forum 2023". This was our 10th annual conference with the theme of Naval Offshore Patrol Ves- sels – Considerations in Design". Canada is looking to replace the Kingston-class MCDVs with an Offshore Patrol Vessel that can meet the demands of year-round operations in Canadian waters but is also capable of international deployment. If that's not enough, we also look back on the event in pictures. In "Building a Safer North: Climate Se- curity Risks, Gap, and Opportunities of the Canadian Arctic" Pauline Baudu explores the renewed global focus on the region since Russia's 2022 re-invasion of Ukraine. Climate impacts in the Canadian arctic threaten human and national security. Of course, our Game Changer section is always of interest and this month is no ex- ception as we feature Sean Diening, Asso- ciate Director, Program Management and Business Development, Raytheon ELAN. And we give The Last Word to Mark Fortugno with "Why Defence Needs to Think More Like a Start Up." Are entre- preneurial minds the innovative catalyst needed in the defence industry? You will have to read to find out. As always, thank you for picking up this issue of Vanguard.
