4 AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023 www.vanguardcanada.com E D I T O R' S N O T E Welcome back to another issue of Van- guard magazine. This month we're zeroing in on training and simulation, so let's get right into it. In our first Feature article, entitled "How One Company is Solving the Pilot Short- age", we sit down with Philippe Perey who is the Head of Technology for CAE's De- fense and Security Group to discuss their software-based simulation training for civil and defence aviation. How does military training need to be updated? What are the major challenges? Why is CAE's newest technology – CA Rise – the game-changing answer? Our second Feature is "Foreign and Do- mestic Operations Simulation Training: A Look Ahead", by Kean Doherty. With recruitment, retention, procurement, and budget challenges the army motto of "im- provise, adapt, and overcome" is being lived to the fullest. This article discusses what lies ahead with Calian representatives: Stephen Fritz-Millet, Assistant Contract Wide Co- ordinator and Contract Site Lead, Canadian Army Simulation Centre and Jay Ballard, Military Training and Simulation Lead. The precise execution of ISR functions is a complicated fusion of technologies, personnel and processes. Learn all about Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnais- sance in the RCAF in our third Feature, "ISR Development in the RCAF", by Terry Leversedge. What are the potential repercussions of using AI in the military domain? The emer- gence of autonomous weapons equipped with artificial intelligence raises significant concerns. We dig into this topic in our Feature by Léa Pérémarty, "Lethal Au- tonomous Weapons: Between Myths and Confusion." Rounding out our Features for the month is our illuminating interview with Terranova Security CEO, Theo Zafirakos, titled "The human side of cybersecurity." Terranova builds the cybersecurity indus- try's highest-quality training content, and they organize the annual Gone Phishing Tournament to help companies benchmark and improve their security, but their opti- mal approach to ensuring data security has nothing to do with technology. In our Perspective section you'll find "Capacity is not the same as capability", by Jack MacDonald, Technical Director at ADGA Group. Can additional resources alone address the procurement issues of the DND? What's the tolerance for risk? Ex- actly what is the solution? With over 2,800 years of cumulative service and innovation, is ADGA's new relationship model the an- swer to so many questions? Of course, what would a new issue of Vanguard be without our Game Changers of the month? Lorraine Ben is Chief Executive for Lockheed Martin Canada and Regional VP for Latin America, but she wasn't always active in the defence field. Find out about how she made the move from the postal service and the key experiences that have driven her success. Shaun McEwan is the President of ADGA Group. With 30 years of experience in the industry, having held roles as CFO, President, and CEO at a vari- ety of technology companies, he has plenty of insights, opinions, wisdom to share. And the Last Word goes to Pierre LeBlanc with his article, "We need a champion and leadership to secure the Arctic." Recent polling shows that an increasing number of Canadians view the Arctic as a key area of interest for monitoring and defending. The Arctic also happens to be a key are of interest for aggressive countries like Russia and China. Are there any quick and cost- effective measures to help ensure Arctic sovereignty? We hope you enjoy this issue of Vanguard. Perhaps with your favourite pumpkin spiced hot drink? We look forward to re- connecting here in October/November and hope to see you at Deep Blue and IPAC Presents: The Changing Landscape of Industrial Participation in Canadian Defence Procurements Conference.
