4 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 www.vanguardcanada.com E D I T O R' S N O T E Submarines are a hot topic these days and by the time you're holding this issue in your hands our 4th Annual Deep Blue Forum 2023 should be underway. We are super excited about our wide range of amazing speakers, including our two keynotes, Cmdre Jason Armstrong, MSM, CD, Director General Naval Force Devel- opment, RCN and Guy Saint-Jacques, for- mer Canadian Ambassador to the People's Republic of China. We look forward to seeing you at The Westin in Ottawa on November 2nd! Here's what you'll find in this issue. Headlining our Feature section is "Why is Endurance Important for a Canadian Submarine?" by Capt(N) Norman Jo- lin (Ret'd). In April 2023 at the Navy Outlook a brief was presented regarding the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP) stating that range, endurance, and persistence are the key requirements of a future submarine to replace the Victoria- Class submarines. Find out why. In our Feature interview, "Maintain- ing a Navy – an interview with DG- MEPM – Cmdre Keith Coffen" we learn the status and the future plans for RCN's vessels which include 12 Halifax-class frig¬ates, four Victoria-class submarines, 12 Kingston-class Maritime Coastal De- fence Vessels, four DeWolf-class Arctic and Off¬shore patrol Vessels (two more in build), eight Orca-class training vessels and 74 auxiliaries. Our Game Changer this month is Tony March, Vice President Engineering and Technology, Babcock Canada. Learn all about his impressive and inspiring career that led him to his current role. The Last Word goes to Capt(N) Ian Parker (Ret'd) with, "A World With No Sun." This article is part of a series on a futuristic submarine named ALBERTA that takes into consideration the thoughts, planning, execution and fruitful results of a well executed submarine design, and the continual conversation between the de- signer and crew. How this ongoing rela- tionship offers the crew all the tools store weapons and external sensors, food, fuel, spares as well as meet environmental regu- lations while providing sufficient habitabil- ity and recreational space for the crew. We hope you enjoy this issue of Van- guard. If we don't see you at the Deep Blue Forum in November, we hope you will be attending one of our other events; IPAC Presents: The Changing Landscape of Industrial Participation in Canadian Defence Procurements Conference in December, C4ISR and Beyond in Janu- ary, and the ShipTech Forum in February. We've got a very busy winter ahead of us.
