In April the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, welcomed a new Chief Military Judge, Captain(N) Catherine Ju- lie Deschênes, succeeding Lieutenant-Colonel Louis-Vincent d'Auteuil, who has been serving as the interim Chief Military Judge since March 2020. Prior to her appointment as a Military Judge in 2019, Captain(N) Deschênes served as a Legal Advisor in the Office of the Chief of the Defence Staff, providing invaluable legal counsel across various domains. Military judges play a crucial role in the Canadian Armed Forces, presiding over courts mar- tial and fulfilling other judicial duties outlined in the National Defence Act. These responsibilities include conducting judicial reviews of pre-trial custody arrangements, ensuring adherence to legal protocols and principles within the military framework. According to the National Defence Act, military judges must have served as military officers for at least 10 years and have been members of a provincial bar for a similar duration. Captain(N) Deschênes not only meets but exceeds these re- quirements, bringing forth a wealth of knowledge garnered through decades of service and legal practice. Homes For Heroes Foundation has Veteran villages in Cal- gary, Edmonton, and Kingston, Ontario. Their fourth Veterans' village is scheduled to be built in Winnipeg in the community of Transcona. Each residence within a H4HF Village bears the name of a Canadian Armed Forces Veteran who gave their life in service to Canada. Among the 20 tiny homes in the Kings- ton Village, one stands as a tribute to Corporal George Taylor, a native of Kingston. Taylor, who was employed by BMO at the time, enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in October 1914. "As the Official Bank of the Canadian Defence Community, BMO is proud to partner with the Homes for Heroes Founda- tion and help accelerate the Foundation's National Veterans' Village Program," said Gayle Ramsay, Head, Everyday Banking, Segment & Customer Growth, BMO.
