Stu- dents return to school, businesses resume their activities, and there's a renewed sense of energy and optimism. This spirit of change is captured in this issue of Vanguard. The members of the Canadian Armed Forces understand the power of change and the necessity of constant evolution more than most. I'm proud to share stories this month that em- body this dynamic spirit. Change can happen swiftly. When I sat down with Brigadier-General Chris Horn- er earlier this summer, he was still Colonel Horner, Commander of the Joint Warfare Centre. Now, as he assumes command of the 3 Canadian Space Division and be- comes the Canadian Armed Forces Joint Force Space Component Commander, his unique career trajectory offers a fascinat- ing perspective on innovation within the Forces. In our conversation, we discussed the Centre's cutting-edge approaches to training and doctrine development, as well as the importance of technological ad- vancements in shaping the future of mili- tary operations. Sometimes, change is more gradual. I remember when drones seemed like a distant, almost futuristic technology. To- day, they are integral to modern warfare, playing a significant role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In this issue, Aryaz Baradarani and Dr. Roman Gr. Maev delve into the latest advancements in drone technology, from improved pow- ertrains and batteries to emerging wire- less charging capabilities that enhance drone efficiency and range. They also explore various drone detection meth- ods, emphasizing how machine learning and artificial intelligence are improving accuracy and adaptability. The article highlights the importance of continuous innovation, collaboration, and regulatory adaptation to ensure safety and security in an increasingly drone-populated airspace. Often, it is the next generation that drives change. That's why it's especially re- warding to feature the firsthand accounts of Memorial University graduates Alexis Benjamin, Tia Button, Robert Caulfeild, and Kevin Wall as they share their experi- ences in the 2023 SNAME Lisnyk Student Design Competition. Their article under- scores the crucial role of industry involve- ment in the education and development of naval architecture students through work terms, facility tours, mentorship, and proj- ect feedback. The support they received from organizations like SNAME and the broader marine industry is helping to build a more skilled and confident work- force in Canada's marine sector. Lastly, I want to extend heartfelt con- gratulations to General Jennie Carignan, who officially assumed her new role as Chief of the Defence Staff this summer, succeeding General Wayne Eyre, who is now preparing for a well-deserved retire- ment. On behalf of everyone at Vanguard and our readers, I thank General Eyre for his service and wish General Carignan the very best in her new role. It's clear that the Canadian Armed Forces continue to be in capable hands. I would also like to congratulate Lieu- tenant-General Stephen Kelsey, our new Vice Chief of the Defence Staff (VCDS) of the CAF. Lieutenant-General Frances Allen, who has retired from the VCDS po- sition, leaves behind an illustrious 41-year career that included advancing critical ini- tiatives like Reconstitution and NORAD Modernization. I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed pulling it together.
