4 DECEMBER 2024/JANUARY 2025 www.vanguardcanada.com E D I T O R' S N O T E From artificial intelligence to quantum computing and everything in between, technology is altering the way the world works – and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is no exception. This issue of Van- guard dives deep into how cutting-edge tech is changing how CAF operates today, and the exciting ways it will define its fu- ture. Our group of esteemed contributors bring their knowledge and experience of both tech and the world of defence to our lineup of enlightening articles. This issue's feature story is a com- prehensive recap of a lively roundtable discussion that took place at last year's C4ISR and Beyond Conference held in Ottawa. Moderated by Dave Anderson, former Digital Transformation Advisor, Chief of Combat Systems Integration (CCSI), the focus of the conversation was "Breaking In, Establishing, and Expand- ing the Digital Beachhead." Panelists ex- plored key concepts and methods that the CAF is using and exploring to drive increased digital transformation. Guests Col Matt Strohmeyer (USAF), Director CJADC2 Experimentation and GIDE, Office of the Secretary of Defense; BGen Chris Horner, Commander 3 Cana- dian Space Division and Joint Force Space Component Commander; Wendy Had- wen, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy-In- dustry, Department of National Defence, and Pat Thauberger, Director, Business Development, General Dynamics Mission Systems – Canada, addressed themes such as teamwork, trust, risk, and sourcing tal- ent at speed and scale. Continuing on the theme of technology, award-winning researcher Dr. Alexander Salt takes a tech-focused look at the fed- eral government's Defence Policy Update, Our North, Strong and Free. Key topics Dr. Salt covers are the innovative systems that are part of NORAD's modernization, as well as some unresolved questions, such as how the CAF will contribute to missile defence. The current and future impacts of such technologies as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, drones and robot- ics, and many more are explored within the context of the Trudeau governments' April update. We also serve up a summary of Van- guard's recent Deep Blue Forum 2024, our fifth annual conference focused on new trends, emerging technologies, and new developments in the underwater do- main. Capt(N) Norman Jolin (Ret'd) was at the conference and provides a thorough recap of the sessions and speeches that covered such topics as the future Canadian Patrol Submarine, infrastructure chal- lenges and opportunities, the U.S. Navy's experience in Arctic submarine operations, and tactics and strategies for planning for the future in the underwater sphere. You can explore artificial intelligence in even greater depth by having a read of James Spencer's Last Word column, in which he reflects on lessons learned from the Canadian public sector's adoption of the much-discussed technology. Lastly, we are delighted to kick off 2025 with our upcoming conferences: C4ISR and Beyond taking place at the Nation- al Arts Centre on January 28th and the ShipTech Forum on February 25th at the same location. Our speaker list is grow- ing daily. You can check out our events at https://C4ISRandBeyond.ca and https:// ShipTechforum.ca respectively for com- plete details and registration information. Looking forward to seeing you there!
