20 DECEMBER 2015/JANUARY 2016 www.vanguardcanada.com i iDeas This may come as a surprise to some, but canada, for all intents and purposes is un-defendable… Canadian military's role would be in this regard. To our minds, this "challenge" would appear to fall within the jurisdiction of an integrated intelligence, law enforce- ment, border control, coast guard, and for- eign affairs unit or task force, not Canada's army, navy, or air force. A second area of concern is the crippling effect(s) of a well-orchestrated cyber-attack or series of attacks. "Systems-wide" con- nectivity, especially in places like Canada, is indispensable and definitive, but also as- sailable. Though this is hardly a revelation, recent encounters with China and anony- mous hacker groups have placed many An- glo-liberal governments on high alert. Un- leashing a malicious infection, espionage, theft of intellectual property and money, and various types of fraud and extortion abound in the digital universe and can be very destructive. Be that as it may, the per- ceived levels of digitally inspired criminal behavior have been met by computer us- ers increasingly aware of their own evident vulnerabilities—this is not to assert that an impervious wall to any and all forms of probing has now been erected, but rather to point out a useful and emergent self- awareness developing around "data com- munities" opposed to cyber-crime. As well, there would seem to be concerted and coordinated efforts by many national governments (of both the democratic and non-democratic variety) to neutralize the impact of information warfare on critical infrastructure and other important pub- lic assets and services. For our purposes, however, unless these measures are being deployed on the battlefield, the role that Canada's military should be playing in re- lation to combatting cyber-security would seem negligible at best. climate change, crime and terrorism Unsurprisingly, climate change and trans- national crime/terrorism have also been appraised and presented as two additional challenges to NATO's member states. Re- ferred to as an "enduring trend," global warming has caught the attention of senior strategic planners because it is believed that an integrated military response will be needed, in many instances, to allay the lateral effects associated with droughts, flooding, and/or weather related agricul- tural disruption. More specifically, it has been argued that rapid deployment teams will be needed to provide humanitarian re- lief when and where violent natural disas- ters materialize. On this count, we envis- age a continued positive role for Canada's armed forces and would add that our spe- cial operations units can provide indispens- able protection services for civilians in re- gions where "warlords" might attempt to perpetuate conditions of poverty, malnutri- tion, and illness by appropriating essential aid resources. Spe- cializing in storage solutions, Rousseau is committed to creating prod- ucts that meet the specific needs of each of its customers. The same principle has been applied in the design of the convenient and easy-to- use L50 electronic lock. It is designed to simplify day-to-day tasks by providing quick access to the contents of your drawers without needing a key. Removing keys from the equation also removes the risk of keys be- ing stolen or lost. If employees leave or change role, you only need to change or delete a code instead of replacing the lock. Managing access to different cabinets is also one of the main ben- efits of this new lock. The L50 allows you to create 20 codes, including the supervisor code. You could decide to have one code per cabinet and give that code out to all employees who use that cabinet. Or you could assign one code per user. In this scenario, employees could use the same code to unlock several cabinets. Regardless of the method chosen, supervisors always have a unique code that provides different levels of access, including one to change user codes. In this way, the L50 lock enables an access management strategy to be established according to your specific business requirements. As with all Rousseau products, the L50 lock has been carefully designed to make it as simple and functional as possible. If you want more information on the L50, visit www.rousseaumetal.com.
