VANGUARD OffICE 1-226 Edward Street, Aurora, ON L4G 3S8 Phone: (905) 727-3875 fax: (905) 727-4428 on march 2, approximately 150 personnel from the military, government, de- fence and marine sectors in Canada gathered for Vanguard's Shipbuilding Tech- nology Forum at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa. This was our third annual event showcasing new technologies that could offer vital solutions to the shipbuilding industry in Canada. A wealth of information was offered at this event, from LNG to additive manu- facturing, modern waste management at sea and design considerations for Arctic operations with the underlying theme of presenting technologies of the future. Jeffery Hutchinson, Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard, who was then the Deputy Commissioner spoke about how the Coast Guard wants to be in the innovation phase. He talked about how they need to innovate their fleet; the starting point is taking data and then look at it differently to see the possibility of innovating to better protect the largest coastline in the world. This all leads to safety in the water with "the aim of having the safest system in the world," ac- cording to the Commissioner. To get an overview of the event, please see pages 24-27 for pictures and the topics that were covered during the one-day event. Vanguard has already started the ball rolling for the 2018 Shipbuilding Tech- nology Forum which will be held on March 1. We will keep you posted on the agenda and developments over the next few months. For this issue, the theme is cybersecurity, innovation and in-service support. In it, you will find some interesting stories like how our modern cyber defence needs partnership to fight future attacks, by John Proctor from CGI. In his article, he points out that the most effective approach to cyber defence is the combined strength of both government and industry. Given the threat that cyber poses, Nicholas Scheurkogel from Cytelligence Inc. talks about what adversaries can do with their advanced cyber capabilities – the possibilities are truly endless and only limited by their imaginations. He went on to elaborate on seven key factors that influence the motivation of an adversary. On the in-service support side, Ugurhan G. Berkok, Professor at the Royal Mil- itary College of Canada and Queen's University, outlines a few ways for defence platform sustainment from traditional to international options. In her column, Nicole Verkindt, Technology Editor for Vanguard, talks about how Trump's trade war will force country-of-origin tracking in supply chains. Our Dashboard for this issue focuses on data breaches; in it, you will find some revealing statistics, such as: every minute there are over 2600 records being breached worldwide. Also, we've highlighted the top five controls that companies have implemented in Canada after they have experienced a data breach. This is a good list to take note of and implement now before there is a data breach in your organization. Finally, I would like to announce our Game Changers for this issue: Len Ander- son, CEO, Renaissance Repair and Supply and Terra Nova Eng; Duane E. Barry, VP of Business Development and Acting MD, QinetiQ Canada, and Philippe Dupuis, President of Precision 3D. These executives and their companies have all been instrumental in changing the game within the defence and security industry in Canada through repair engineering and automation, as is the case of Renais- sance Repair and Supply; the strategic acquisition of Meggitt Target Systems by QinetiQ, and cold spray technology by Precision 3D. Enjoy this issue, and I hope to see you at CANSEC at the end of May. I look forward to speaking to as many of you as possible so as to better understand your needs and how we can further serve you, our readers.
