F-35 LIGHTNING II: READY TO FILL CANADA'S CAPABILITY GAP Canada's fighter capability gap can be solved in the near term with benefits that will last well into the future. Lockheed Martin recently provided the Govern- ment of Canada with the latest informa- tion on cost, availability and capability of the world's most advanced fifth generation fighter aircraft, the F-35 Lightning II. Not only can the F-35 fill the near term capabil- ity gap, it will continue to serve the Ca- nadian Armed Forces for decades to come with true interoperability with 11 of Cana- da's allies that have already begun procure- ment. Lockheed Martin can provide a superior, leading-edge capability far exceeding the survivability of any other fighter aircraft. It is operational today, with over 100,000 flight hours. The F-35 can be delivered to Canada in the timeframe identified to meet the urgent need of the Royal Canadian Air Force at a cost of $80-85 million USD. We fundamentally believe the F-35 is a better value for taxpayer dollars than the fourth generation F/A-18 Super Hornet current- ly under consideration.
