Inside industry inBrief General Dynamics Canada has partnered with Colt Canada to network the latter's Sniper Weapon & Observer Reconnaissance Devices (SWORD) system, which integrates weapon-mounted surveillance and targeting devices with smartphone-like technology and brings situational-awareness information directly to the solider via the weapon. Thales Canada has received a five-year, $20-million contract to lead innovative S&T projects for safety and national security on behalf of Defence Research and Development Canada. Boeing will use Bombardier's Challenger 605 business jet as the platform for its Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) program, a maritime surveillance system based on Boeing's P-8A mission system technology. Boeing teammate Field Aviation will modify the Challenger 605's structure and air vehicle systems into the MSA configuration. MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates has signed three contracts totaling approximately CA$2.5 million for the provision of RADARSAT-2 information and services, two with an undisclosed national oil company and one with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. St. John's-based Bluedrop Performance Learning has entered into an agreement with Halifax-based Atlantis Systems to indirectly acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Atlantis for $1 million. I The federal government is seeking bids for mobile satellite communication terminals for army vehicles. Referred to as Satellite Communications on the Move, SOTM will allow army vehicles to communicate with tactical headquarters or command posts via satellite and maintain that communication while mobile. Vancouver Shipyards might not yet be cutting steel on the RCN's two new Joint Support Ships, but both have already been given names: HMCS Queenston and HMCS Chateauguay in recognition of the battles of Queenston Heights and Chateauguay during the War of 1812. CAE concluded deals worth $140 million with the U.S. Air Force (USAF) related to the KC-135 tanker program, with an undisclosed customer, and with the German Air Force. Airbus Military and Vector Aerospace Engine Services – Atlantic (ES-A) will partner to help secure aerospace jobs in Prince Edward Island. The partnership is based on Airbus Military's pursuit of the fixed-wing search and rescue program and would see ES-A provide engine maintenance for the C295. Montreal-based Revision Military will supply the Canadian Armed Forces with its Batlskin Bullet Resistant Plates, a lighter weight ballistic plate, following the award of a $9.5 million contract. The lighter kit is part of an ongoing effort to reduce the weight load carried by most soldiers on operations. This fall the government launched a new four-year, $110 million Technology Demonstrator Program to fund large-scale demonstrations of newly developed technologies. The program is a key recommendation of the 2012 Emerson Report and was part of the government's 2013 Economic Action Plan.
