Building on the success of investments in Quebec aerospace innovation, the AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION OF CANADA (AIAC) and the CONSORTIUM FOR RESEARCH & INNOVATION IN AERO- SPACE IN QUEBEC have launched a national initiative based on the Quebec model called the CONSORTIUM FOR AEROSPACE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN CANADA (CARIC). Stemming from recommen- dations in the Emerson report, CARIC is a national research and technology network that will bring together representatives from industry, academia and research institutions to identify strategic aerospace technology areas and facilitate collaborative R&D. MACDONALD, DETTWILER AND ASSOCIATES has been awarded a fi ve- year contract valued at C$5 million to provide support for the Raven-B unmanned aerial surveillance solution acquired by the government in October 2013. The contract includes options for incremental activities up to an additional $11 million. MDA also signed a C$64 million contract with DND to provide eight radar surveillance systems for the RCAF's CP-140 Aurora fl eet and a four-year, C$16 million contract with the RCN to provide in-ser- vice support for training and maintenance of the Victoria-class submarine trainers. BLACKBERRY has become the fi rst mobility solution to receive full operational capability (FOC) to run on U.S. Department of Defense networks. The coveted FOC designation, granted by the Defense Information Systems Agency, means government employees with a BlackBerry 10 smartphone connected with the company's enterprise service can securely "access email, data, apps and other DoD network resources." DRS TECHNOLOGIES CANADA, part of the FINMECCANICA group, has been subcontracted to provide communications systems for Royal Australian Navy's ANZAC-class frigates. The contract was awarded by SELEX ES. DRS will provide all internal tactical and secure voice switching systems and terminals. The contract in- volves eight ship-sets and two shore systems. L-3 COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS-EAST was selected by LOCKHEED MARTIN CANADA to design the interior and exterior communica- tions subsystems for the RCN's Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS). Lockheed has also contracted L-3 MAPPS, a Montreal- based division of L-3 Marine & Power Systems, to design the Inte- grated Platform Management System subsystems for the AOPS. Canadian soldiers will soon have a choice of footwear. The gov- ernment has awarded two contracts totalling $11.7 million to KODIAK GROUP HOLDINGS and LP ROYER for two types of new Cana- dian-made boots. Cambridge-based Kodiak received a $4.2 million contract to provide 28,000 pairs of boots while LP Royer received a $7.5 million award for 52,000 pairs. Both contracts include options to buy up to an additional 70,000 boots over four years.
